TRANSPORTATION

Public transportation or transportation in general, may be complex to descifer, but once you get an overview, lots of money can be saved and the smoother the experience can get.

First of all, Copenhagen is an extremely walkable city. You can walk from one end, say Free Town Christiania to Frederiksberg in less than an hour. From Vesterbro to Nørrebro in half. Walking is always recommendable, since it is the pace that provides the most detail. But it is of course also time consuming.

Biking is another way to get around. You can rent bikes all over the city, most bike shops has rentals, but you can also use ‘City bikes'. You'll find stations all over Copenhagen with white bikes with touch screen displays and electrical engines. They are reliable and pretty fast. It'll cost you somewhere in between 2 and 4 euros per 30 minutes. You can go to most places in 15 minutes. You can pay with credit card or “Rejsekort’(see explanation below) following the instructions on the touch screen.

Another city bike brand are the orange ‘donkey republic' bikes. You'll need and app to use them(search ‘Donkey Republic' or follow instructions on the bike) Price will be around 13,75dkk (1.9) euros per 30 minutes, 55 dkk (7€) for 2 hours or 110 dkk(15€) for a full day.

When biking always stay to the right side, on the streets or bike lanes, unless you overtake another bike. That way there’ll always be space, for other to pass by.

Put your right flat hand up in the air before stopping, point your left hand flat to the left, before turning left, or point your right hand right before turning right. Always show respect for other traficants.

The public transportation network is extensive and intertwined. It is divided into zones, with zone 1 and 2 covering central Copenhagen.

The important thing to understand here is tickets are valid for a limited amount of time, across the different means of transportation. That means; buses  trains, metro, ferry bus.

The public transportation network is extensive and intertwined. It is divided into zones, with zone 1 and 2 covering central Copenhagen. The important thing to understand here is tickets are valid for a limited amount of time, across the different means of transportation. That means; buses  trains, metro, ferry bus.

The cheapest ticket for an adult is 24(3.1€) dkk. It covers two zones for one hour. Within that hour you can use the same ticket across the transportation types. You can go by train from Østerbro St. to The Central Station, catch bus 2A to Christianshavn, take the Metro to Kgs. Nytorv, walk through Nyhavn and go with the ferry bus from Nyhavn to Refshaleøen. All within an hour(if you really hurry) and within two zones.

Every zone added will cost you an additional 12 dkk. (1,7€).

The most expensive ticket covers 9 zones for two hours, the 9 zones covers most, if not all, of Zealand. It'll cost you some 108 dkk(14€).

If you buy a ‘Rejsekort', you will get some heavy discounts.

You can get the Rejsekort in all train and Metro stations. Look for grey machines with touch screens and white and blue colors. Follow the instructions or go to the ticket counter. Get a general rejsekort, not a personal one. You will have to deposit 50 dkk.(7€) and add a minimum of 100 dkk.

I believe you can get the deposit back and the money not used, either at the machines or at the ticket counters( I never tried this myself, since I keep recharging the same card).

There has to be a minimum amount of 70 or 80 dkk in the card, including the deposit, in order to commence a journey. If not, the machine will reject the card, saying 'saldo for lav' (credit to low).

Once you have the card, you scan it, entering any transport type. then the rules from above applies, only prices are reduced to half if going outside rushhours or to some 60 or 70% of the aforementioned prices.

Scan every time you enter a new bus, train, metro, ferry bus. Scan it in the exit scanner when finishing the whole journey. Remember this last step, if you forget it, it will charge 50 dkk of the card I penalty. This is for the system to know the journey has ended.

For free entrance to most museum and free public transportation, you can buy the Copenhagen Card. 24 hours will cost you 399 dkk. or around 53 €.
