Highlights

Christianshavn is made on artificial islands constructed in the early 1600 hundreds. It faces the harbor to the west and is bordered by old ramparts from south to north curving east. The ramparts were part of a fortification complex protecting the fleet and the city.

The architecture of the old parts, was influenced by dutch merchants who settled there in the beginning.

Lots of canals criss-crossing the area, makes it a beautiful setting for hanging out, watching boats, having waterfront picnics or just strolling around.

CHRISTIANSHAVN

Christianshavn has that maritime vibe going on. The life around the canals is buzzling at usually a quiet pace, people, boats, ships, masts, kayaks, tour boats, seagsuls, cafes, bars.

The pace is also usually very slow in Freetown Christiania(look in favourite parts for more), the hippie village within. Except, of course, at the music venues and outdoor concerts that takes place.

It is easy to navigate Christianshavn, the central big canal, Christianshavns Canal, cuts through the area from SW to NE, so you can always follow that and you will be in proximity of things to do and see.

The twisted spire of 'Vor Frelsers Kirke'(Our Saviors Church) is a landmark, just next to the central square, 'Christianshavn Torv' and to Freetown Christiania.

You can enter, or leave Chistianshavn Torv, by a variaty of means, most relevant, I guess, buses nr. 9A and 2A that connects to the central Station and places in between and beyond.  There is a Metro stop at the square and a Harbor Bus stop next to Knippels Bro, the big bridge connecting Christianshavn and the Inner City down the street.

You can cross that bridge on bike or feet and it will take you down by Christiansborg, the parliament building and the area around the main shopping street Strøget.

For the more quiet and green experience you can walk the ramparts that now serves as a very long stretch of parks. You can enter Christiania from that side as well. To reach those, walk in the other direction from the square, away from the water.

You will find great many really good restaurants in Christianshavn, in fact, you will find some of the worlds best restaurants in Christianshavn.

The very best, at least named so four times, is Noma in the northern part bordering Refshaleøen. New nordic cuisine in its most experimental form, awarded with two Michelin stars.

Its sister restaurant, 108, by the Inner Harbor Bridge (Inderhavnsbroen), has only one star and will serve food in a more casual envirronment, to more reasonable prices. They have 10 seats for walk inns.

Era Ora by the canal, has been named the best italian restaurant, outside Italy, in the world and has a cheaper sister restaurant L'Altro in Torvegade.

Kadeau, in Wildersgade is a higly acclaimed two michelin starred restarant, with a next door cocktail bar called 1408.

No. 2 in the harbor front with a view to the Black Diamond Library on the other side, is a sister restaurant to two starred AOC near the Royal Palace.

The above mentioned restaurants are of cause rather pricey.

For a cheaper price you can find delicious traditional Danish food in Færgecafeen in Strandgade by the water in old school maritime settings,. Try the smørrebrød for lunch or some other classics for dinner. They have home made snaps with different flavors to accompany the food. There are seatings also in a ship in front of the restaurant.

Take a pizza to go (to the canal) in Tino's in Skt. Annæ Gade, some sushi from Let's Sushi in the corner on the other side of the street, or go to the out door food market next to the Inner Harbor Bridge for a variety of delights(closed in winter).

For good veggie options check out Christiania, where you will also find most of the action in terms of going out late night.

Christiania borders Prinsessegade and is enclosed by walls. It is always open though, accessible from many different entrances around the walls.
